That was the 2008 COTEC Congress in Hamburg
Four days of Congress are behind us. It was a fantastic event!

A big thank-you to all of you who came to the Congress in Hamburg and gave us such exceptionally positive feedback.
Impressive, varied, interesting, broadened my knowledge, motivating, informative, cheerful, good fun and many other positive comments were made at the Congress itself but also afterwards to the COTEC Congress Committee. Once again, thank you very much indeed. At the same time we take a certain pride in having managed to put together a good programme and the fact that the organisation went so smoothly.

Hamburg played host to 1,800 participants from 46 different nations. 600 of them came from other European countries and the rest of the world.
Registration was overflowing at around 9 o'clock on the Thursday morning, with long queues of people having formed as they tried to get through quickly to be at the opening in the hall in time.

A very big thank-you to our 225 speakers, who except for a few who had to cancel at short notice had made themselves available for the 56 series of papers and nearly 60 workshops. Things also went extremely smoothly on the technical side too.

Our "Congress angels" – 156 pupils in pink-coloured T-shirts ready to assist the participants and especially the speakers – got particularly positive feedback. They were always there whenever needed to give friendly and competent help and advice for any questions which cropped up. So thank you again all the pupils of the three Hamburg schools and their teachers. A special thanks goes to Meicke Schnell, who with much presence of mind and her total command of the situation always had the planning under control.

And our pupils certainly had quite a lot to do. Each pupil walked 29,540 steps, which is 40 kilometres! Altogether that makes around 6,200 kilometres, in other words the distance from Hamburg to Portugal and back again!

And a few more figures you might like to digest to give you an idea of the huge dimensions of what was consumed:

  • 25,000 sheets of letter paper

  • 10,000 evaluation forms

  • 11,000 sandwiches in the packed lunches

  • 800 litres of coffee

  • 1,000 litres of water

  • 4,000 apples

Greeting President of COTEC
Dear Colleagues,

on behalf of the Council of Occupational Therapists for the European Countries (COTEC), I would like to invite you to join us at the 8th European Congress.

The European Congress is the major event for Occupational Therapists in Europe. It will be a stimulating forum where colleagues from different countries and backgrounds have the opportunity of sharing their knowledge, ideas, and examples of good practice. The Congress is an opportunity to learn about new developments and to support others in their search of excellence.

The motto "Investing for Progress" reflects the current EU policies urging investment in knowledge and in good practice. The Congress offers the opportunity of participating in a varied and challenging programme, to network with colleagues and developing and increasing knowledge and practice.

Hamburg, the colourful port of Northern Europe, undoubtedly reflects our diversity and also our willingness to work and develop together.

I would like to thank the German Association of Occupational Therapists for their hard work and efforts in organising and hosting the 8th European Congress in 2008.

Looking forward seeing you in Hamburg!

Best Regards,
Maria Skouroliakos
- President of COTEC

Greeting President, German Association of Occupational Therapists
Dear Colleagues,

the German Association of Occupational Therapists is pleased to be hosting the 8th European Congress of Occupational Therapy in cooperation with COTEC and welcomes the international as well as the German world of occupational therapy in Hamburg from 22 - 25 May 2008.

It is not only an obligation, but rather an affair of the heart for the German Association of Occupational Therapists to contribute to the development of occupational therapy in Europe and therefore also in Germany. The numerous volunteers of the German Association of Occupational Therapists support the organising committee in every way and will be pleased to contribute to the success of this congress. The German occupational therapists are full of anticipation and hope to welcome as many participants as possible.

Share your experience with your colleagues from different countries. Develop new professional perspectives and connect knowledge with practice. Make our jobs more professional - let's do that together. We hope to welcome a large number of participants who want to invest their knowledge, experience, ideas and visions in the progress of occupational therapy. Hamburg should become a place for creating friendships and growing together.

The German Association of Occupational Therapists as well as German colleagues are looking forward to welcoming our international neighbours in Hamburg.

We are happy to invite you to the 8th European Congress of Occupational Therapy in Hamburg.

Greeting President, Congress Organising Committee
Dear colleagues,

it is an honour to be organising the European Congress of Occupational Therapy for you.

The organisational work is becoming increasingly intensive but my team and I are still enjoying it just as much as ever.

The finishing touches have been put to the programme, which means one of the major stages has been completed. Have a look at our Web site and the page with the provisional programme – you’ll be surprised by the variety it offers. We are now just hoping that large numbers of colleagues will register for the Congress as soon as registration is open.

You can look forward to visiting a modern and hospitable Germany with the outstanding metropolis of Hamburg. Hamburg's congress centre provides the best opportunity to share and pass on knowledge within the field of occupational therapy. "Investing for progress" is also a chance for us to promote cooperation. Hamburg will provide occupational therapists from Europe and all over the world with the opportunity to get to know each other, as well as to discuss different affairs and to feel solidarity within the professional guild of occupational therapists.

We are striving creating the best forum and making your stay as pleasant as possible. Come to Hamburg and find out for yourself. We look forward to welcoming you.
